Our Home Oxygen (HOAS) Team
Ruth Thomas
Ruth Thomas is the Lead Respiratory Nurse Specialist in AIRS. Prior to this she led pulmonary rehabilitation and worked for many years as a practice nurse. She runs a local respiratory interest group affiliated to PCRS-UK and has also developed training on behalf of the International primary Care Respiratory Group as well as Education for Health. She was on the editorial board for the PCRU journal, pulmonary rehabilitation lead for Association of Respiratory Nurse Specialists, sat on British Thoracic Society pulmonary rehab guidelines update and NHS England pulmonary rehab steering group, as well as having had a voluntary role as British Lung Foundation nurse.
Ruth has been involved in many local respiratory projects. She is also interested in functional breathing and is a Buteyko Breathing Practitioner as well as being on the committee for the Buteyko Breathing Association.
Vicki Wilson
Vicki has worked at Whaddon Healthcare since 2018. She is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner and an independent prescriber. Vicki’s role is varied but currently her main focus is Home Oxygen due to her nursing background is respiratory.
About Us
Our Service
Whaddon Healthcare provide an at home and in surgery service for patients who are on Oxygen. This service is called HOAS. We offer a combination of home visits and clinic appointments. The service is not an emergency response service for patients who require oxygen therapy for acute episodes of illness.
Our Aim
Our team of clinicians monitor, review and support patients who have been prescribed oxygen for their medical needs.
- Capillary blood gas analysis to determine a patient’s oxygen requirements (this involves taking a small sample from an ear lobe)
- Initiation, maintenance and withdrawal of home oxygen therapy
- Education, advice and support for the patient, and their loved ones relating to oxygen
